Why choose the Sunfish/ISCA Dinghy?

The Sunfish has been around as a racing class since 1955. It is a fun, stable inexpensive way to learn to sail. It is the boat I learned in in the late 1960's before I began sailing Lasers. Now I'm back full time in the Sunfish! Why? The answer is simple, just like the Sunfish. The boat is stable, fun to sail, fast, inexpensive and a great platform to learn on. It's also one of the most competitive classes in the world. It's still used in the Pan AM Games. It is relatively inexpensive to get into the class. There are literally a million out there to choose from. For as little as $1000 you can buy in and get to the starting line. It's a great masters class, the boats are much more stable than the other single-handed choices which means you'll spend more time sailing and less time swimming. Also, no crew required.  The boat also tolerates a wide variation in skipper weight. You don't need to be 6'2" and 200+ pounds to sail in 15+ knots of breeze and win. I recently raced Goatman regatta and we had race winners from 100-200 pounds. New Boats are also available in our area from Vela Sailing ready to race for a little over $6000. In our area we have everyone from beginners to ex Olympic types so it's easy to fit in. We have circuit regattas at Seabrook,  Austin YC. Lake Canyon YC, Lake Worth Sailing Club, Rush Creek YC and other regattas in our area. This year's World Championship is being held at Rush Creek in October.  There has never been a better time to sail a Sunfish! Come and join us, whether male or female, young or young at heart like myself I'm sure you're going to love it.
